CSR Reporting in China

The last fiscal year saw a large number of CSR reports released by Chinese companies in China. When reading these reports, you will find that while they all look pretty, not all of them are informative or useful.

Some of the reports are released under pressure imposed by the government and industrial associations. Many of the companies are just trying to follow the global trend.

According to information from the Shanghai Stock Exchange Bureau, there are a total of 290 companies that have disclosed CSR reports, sustainable development reports and corporate citizenship reports. Among them, 282 companies released their first social responsibility report. Some giant state-owned enterprises have even started to release CSR reports for the foreign countries in which they operate, for example Sinosteel released their sustainable development report for Africa and COSCO disclosed its sustainable development report for Kazakhstan. The COSCO CSR report has even been awarded the Global Model Report by the UN Global Compact and State Grid has been involved in the developing process of the ISO 26000.
